Fall Out From US Over Fred Mitchell’s Travel Advisory

Answer: Everyone except Mr. Mitchell of course!

In typical fashion the country’s chief “diplomat” didn’t look before he took the plunge to poke the US in the eye. Something he seems to get excited about.

Anyone with a shred of common sense would be concerned about the two recent Police shootings in the US but as was quickly pointed out “the chances of any Bahamian being murdered in the Bahamas is roughly 30 times the chance of a black man being killed by a policeman in the U.S.”

While the militarisation of the Police both here and abroad is a valid concern, these statistics make a mockery of The Bahamas advisory against the US.

As if that wasn’t enough, a recent study by a Harvard Professor suggests “On the most extreme use of force – officer-involved shootings – we find no racial differences in either the raw data or when contextual factors are taken into account.”

Then yesterday the US issued yet another statement about the increases in armed robbery against US tourists in Nassau. We can't win.

Instead of trying to reduce violent crime here at home, adding distorted conjecture in his sanctimonious eagerness, Mr. Mitchell is left with egg on his face, causing even more international embarrassment about The Bahamas crime statistics.

Another sad day.
