"Is today's government dysfunctional? Of course. But not because it can't get things done. The problem is that it does so many things that it shouldn't."

"Happiness, prosperity and innovation aren't gifts from politicians. They are achievements of the free human mind. We need government to protect that freedom. When it instead tramples on individual rights in pursuit of whatever politicians feel is in the public interest, it abandons defined limits and becomes an enemy of freedom and progress."

Its the old and perplexing question, does government and the political ruling class really know what is in the best interest of its citizens or what they “feel is in the public interest”??
Today government has all but forgotten that the public interest is really the National Interest of the country.. Political interest and self-interest have replaced National Interest, and together have become the primary factors that drive the political process and government decision making in the Bahamas.. This has left our country with NO meaningful expression or definable statement of National Interest.. Without such a declaration, the nation is left to the whim and fancy of lax politicians who govern as they please despite the needs and requirements of the people.. Governance by political self-interest inevitably leads to corruption, cronyism and fraud which are most destructive to the economic integrity of the country..
In years gone bye, the FNM Party at election time use to issue a Political Manifesto which was their political platform.. This was more that a political statement as it expressed the overlying objectives by defining the country’s National Interest and goals.. A similar National Manifesto is needed today so the people would have a kind of road map outlining national objectives and where the country is heading.. National priorities would be established within a broad time frame for implementation.. No more piecemeal approaches to government such as we have today, but policies that are fulfilled in the public or National Interest..
