So according to press reports the government has announced they've ordered 1,000 lime trees for $1 million ($1,000 each) to send to the Agriculture and Marine Science Institute in North Andros.

This seems to have been brought about as a result of a problem with limes that has increased prices, so in our government's wisdom, we're now going to be self-sufficient in limes using taxpayer money.

Not only will the government make us self-sufficient in limes, the Minister of Agriculture announced "It’s not too long from now where we will be self-sufficient in some things to be announced.”

There have been so many grand announcements and photo ops of politicians at the ribbon cutting celebration of the myriad of issues they were going to solve. Yet the problems still exist and the budget just keeps getting bigger. More and more good money after bad.

It's what governments do best. Solve imaginary issues at other peoples expense. But the sound bites are usually so enthralling and make us feel so good that our government is on the case.

I would feel so much better if they were investing their own money in these grand schemes.

But I'm too cynical you say. This is really a case of a proactive government solving a lime crisis, right?

Right!

For heaven's sake, the lime "crisis" is upon us now. By the time these trees grow to provide some limes, they might need to plant apple trees or take some other drastic measure involving taxpayer funds for some other imaginary crisis.

If history is our guide, this debacle (and the many other failed "agricultural" schemes) will not be mentioned amid another debate over how much more tax dollars need to be raised to cover profligacy by the government.

Maddening.
