Mr. Christie and the Baha Mar payout

image from www.rugusavay.comWe should all applaud Prime Minister Christie's decision to review the amount it will pay Baha Mar for the road works as outlined in this Nassau Guardian article.

He is correct in saying they (the Government) owes "an obligation to the people of The Bahamas to jealously guard the revenue of the country and to ensure that we are spending the money wisely and properly.”

I must assume there is a contract in place that both Baha Mar and the Government agreed to and as long as they are confirming the numbers based on the terms of the agreement, both sides have that obligation and ability.

Now if the Government decides to arbitrarily change the agreement, that's where every right thinking Bahamian should be heard.

For now he says "We are not causing any harm or any injustice to Baha Mar".

Let's hope this is the case and once Baha Mar proves what they paid, settlement will be made by the Government.

As for the Governments obligation to The Bahamas to protect revenue and spend tax dollars wisely, we will know exactly how that turns out during the next budget cycle I assume. Actually we might know before that when they place appropriation bills before Parliament.

But then again, as Alexis de Tocqueville said; "A democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it." Let's hope we won't be taxed even more as a result of the agreement.
