Why is politics so divisive? Photo ID for voters makes sense.

by Rick Lowe

One group throws a jab and the other a left hook, and so it continues with insults and rhetoric with neither group offering any real alternative policy to right the ship of state. And in America it all seems to have come off the tracks.

Take the fact that the requirement people present photo ID to vote is being billed as an attempt to prevent people voting. It's even being called discriminatory, a new version of "Jim Crow".

Well doesn't it make sense that a voter should have proper ID?

Look how we have to jump through hoops to get registered to vote here, and no one complains that it is an attempt to prevent people voting. In fact it's a disincentive for non-Bahamians to try to vote – voter fraud not withstanding.

Surely all politicians should want to ensure that a person voting is actually that person and legitimately has the right to vote?

Here's a couple articles worth reading:

Gene Healy, VP, The Cato Institute on Down with Politics…  and
Jonathan S. Tobin of Commentary Magazine on Left Turns Voting Rights Into a Farce…

Rick as you know I live in Canada, we HAVE TO at the polls ( Federal, Provincial, and Municipal ) give photo ID before we can vote, it’s just share nonsense whats happening in the lower 48 with this issue, soon a cat will be able to cast a vote.

No question photo ID for everyone is the way to go, we have it for car licences, so there is no credible reason not to.
However, the present attack on minority voters in the USA is deplorable. That this self righteous movement is only applied to GOP controlled States speaks loudly that it is purely an attempt to deprive certain citizens of their inalienable right to vote.
As a long time Tory and right winger, should I have been privileged to vote in the USA, I would vote Dem this time, on principle, a precept that is very much lacking in most modern politicians throughout the world.

    Thanks Dr. Cove.
Sometimes we lose sight of the big picture as a result of petty politics. There is ample time for people to get their ID.
If everyone agrees that voters should identify themselves as being who they are and having the legitimate right to vote, what’s the big deal?
We raise trouble over the fact that there is a wing of the Republican party that that are religious zealots, yet we forget where Mr. Obama attends Church.
Both sides, make a mockery of each other and have their “wings” that should give us pause. After all they’re human.
If I lived there and had the right to vote I would vote Libertarian – who is systematically denied the opportunity to enter the presidential debates by the way. That’s democracy for you.
    Gary Johnson for President!

No Rick, sometimes we have no sight or insight.. Shame on you Sir for championing the forces of voter fraud which is ramped in American elections.. This is just another Department of Justice ploy to register illegal Aliens to vote.. Many by the way do have photo IDs which are easy to obtain with just a little effort.. The so-called attack on minority voters is mostly government fiction sold to an duped and gullible segment of the population.. Have we forgotten about voter intimidation in north Philadelphia?? Despite irrevocable evidence on film, the Department of (In)Justice did nothing, turning a blind eye to this Constitution violation of voter rights.. This couldn’t be reverse discrimination in the land of the free?? Well there goes your so-called ideal of “inalienable right to vote”..
Yes, you are correct that photo IDs should be used and I might add to prevent voter fraud.. Even wonder why there is no photo ID taken when Americans register to vote?? Figure that one out.. And let us not forget the votes of American citizens overseas seldom get counted and that over forty percent of American military service personnel who vote never get counting as well.. These facts has been know for many years, but the Defense Department and the Department of Injustice again turns a blind eye.. What ever happened to that noble ideal of inalienable voting rights?? Yet, this is the same country that sends people like Jimmy Carter all over the world as observers of other nation’s elections.. Should we laugh or cry, you take your choice..
This is a simple problem with a simple solution which Federal legislation can solve.. Every LEGAL American by Constitution law has the right to vote.. The key words here are “legal American” as voting rights are vested in legal Americans.. Yet, these political factions and even political parties that seem to support an open franchise where all residents, regardless of nationality, should be allowed to vote.. After all, if over 2,000 deceased and dead registered voters can have their vote counted in gangland Chicago to determine the outcome and make the difference in the Presidential election of 1960, anything is possible when voters, dead or alive, can somehow go to the polls and vote.. Where is Jimmy Carter when he really be needed.. Oh sorry, I forgot he was in the same political party as the dead man voting.. My mistake..
Nothing is perfect in this imperfect world.. Every legal citizen has the God given right to vote as set forth in the Constitution.. Legislation apparently is needed at the Federal level of government to require photo IDs when legal citizens register to vote.. Problem solved, issue closed.. But will the Congress act to preserve this Constitutional right?? You be the judge..

    Attack on voters ?

  6. Tradewinds's avatar Tradewinds says:

Not so Dennis.. ILLEGAL alien voters which Obama is trying to make his base.. What could be better than an illegal president trying to court an illegal voter base.. This could happen only in America were today the “We the people” of Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence are no longer united as one people.. They are divided, fractionalized and have lost their sense of common identity as We the American people..
In essence Dennis, this is really a stealth attack on the very foundation and legality of American democracy where illegal alien voters are being encouraged and registered to vote.. I use to believe that this was possibly voter fraud, and not what it has become today, an everyday occurrence.. What is there not to understand about the word ILLEGAL??
A valid, photo voter ID card, issued upon showing proof of valid citizenship, should be mandated by the next Congress.. Then lets see what the Supreme Court will have to say.. If we can do it here in the Bahamas, they surely can do it in the United States..

I guess trade winds doesn’t keep up with the news, to date the only evidence of voter fraud has proven to be in Florida, where a company hired by the GOP appears to have systematically doctored their documents. Very few cases, if any, have appeared in the GOP governed states.
That he still argues that Obama is an alien and as he puts an illegal president places him in a strange position, nevertheless, in good company, with Donald Trump and cronies.
I am enjoying De Toquerville’s book, and sincerely believe, he together with the founding fathers must be turning in their collective graves, in the knowledge of the present state of American politics.

    Hear, hear, Dr. Cove!!!

  9. Tradewinds's avatar Tradewinds says:

With all due respect Dr. Cove, please read my two comments where I cited the voter fraud of 1960 which decided a Presidential election as well as the 2008 voter intimidation in Philadelphia.. No major prosecutions in these two cases were ever forth coming.. Do you remember the thousands of fraud cases that Acorn was confronting before it was closed down to eliminate the problem?? I also could have mentioned the 16 workers for the John Kerry campaign in Wisconsin charged with voter fraud that went unprosecuted by Wisconsin authorities.. Check out the political allegiance of the Governor and perhaps you will understand why..
Get your facts straight when you cite the problems in Florida.. Florida state election officials have uncovered 53,000 dead voters that are still on the election polls.. This is a greater number than the population of Pensacola and can have a significant impact upon an election’s outcome.. How do you explain the Obama Administration and the Justice Department concentrating their efforts on Florida, Georgia, Texas and Arizona while turning a blind eye to Wisconsin, Illinois and Pennsylvania??
Finally I again chose not to go into the 2008 Senate race in Minnesota where 1099 felons voted in a race that was won by a mere 312 votes.. I also avoided Illinois and Road Island where voter fraud is rampant.. So to say that the only evidence of voter fraud exists in Florida is an statement made ignoring the facts..
Voter fraud is no laughing matter and could very well effect the outcome of the November elections.. But the one thing we can count on is that there will be voter fraud committed in almost every State in the Union..

  10. Dennis's avatar Dennis says:

Does not matter Dr.Cove,Illegal aliens should not be able to vote period.I don’t care if its one case or three thousand cases, get the ID & vote.My goodness if its required here(And even here they have found ways to cheat the system) don’t you think it should be required in the US ? What took Obama so long to produce his documents if he is or is not a citizen ? You need ID to take a piss, why not to vote ? I will tell you why,its exactly what Tradewinds says about the illegal aliens voting & that is wrong & illegal. There should be NO gray area here, you have ID,you vote, you don’t have it,you do NOT VOTE !

The Pew Foundation recently released its study on voter fraud in the United States.. It stated that contrary to what politicians claim, voter fraud is a massive problem.. Over 2 million dead are on the registration rolls.. One in eight registered voters are found to have irregularities and could be invalid.. 2.7 million voter registrations were found to be by non citizens.. The Data goes on and on.. So much for the pronouncement that there is little if any meaningful voter fraud in the United States.. Check out John Fund’s new book on who is stealing elections which is an eye opener..
