Bahamas fury over Menorah used as Christmas decoration on Bay Street

by Rick Lowe

For a nation that preaches to the outside world about tolerance and went to extremes to celebrate the election of the first Black president in the US has shown itself to be as naive as those we preach to.

Menorah

On Friday past one or two people expressed their disgust about a decorative Menorah being hung as a Christmas decoration in Rawson Square on Bay Street.

Apparently the shouts of displeasure were enough to have the decoration, shown in the photo here, removed.

I am not in the least bit religious, but this is the height of intolerance. Who cares if the Menorah is used to celebrate a Jewish tradition?

Only other people should be tolerant, not us.

    Thank’s Don’t.
It certainly seems there is a silent majority on this one.
Hopefully the Menorah’s will be returned.

I thought Anglican priests had to actually study some theology, and therefore would know better than start a religious interdenominational squabble.
I am of the opinion that it is not so out of place in light of the religious fundamentalist resurgence we are experiencing here, but also globally.
Perhaps a return to the dark ages is in order.
Do we have a self appointed Bahamian cardinal or pope yet?
Perhaps they could clear this up.

Did you see the follow up article in The Tribune?
The Menorah’s will be put back onto the poles in Rawson Square.
    Common sense finally prevails.

If they are going to do crap like that, then please REMOVE the Islam church from Carmichael road & half of the lying cheating sweethearting “Bishops” & “Revs” from this place. That to me is what you need to worry about.

Well, hey! We only ever want to promote tolerance when it seeks to benefit us. One of the worst things about people in general is their inability to parallel the struggles of others with theirs.
