The headline in the business section of the Tribune this morning gave us the shocking news "Government owed $300m in property tax." What was even more incredulous was the sub-heading "Minister:’ The culture doesn’t lend itself to enforcement’, with tax seen as something to avoid, not pay.
It goes on to report that some $24m of casino taxes may have to be written off.
Could this all be another case of people knowing people in the right places?
Perhaps someone can explain to me why so many people can just not bother to pay property tax and why so many people can bring items from the US by commercial carrier and by private plane and and they are excused from the customs levy – another incredible figure I am sure.
Perhaps someone can post a list of who is accountable and which taxes it is fashionable to avoid paying.
We do know that the pensioners will have to pay 2.65% of their pension for NHI.
We do know that the average working person will soon have to pay private insurance and the income tax called NHI. These two apparently will not be a part of " the culture that doesn’t lend itself to enforcement."
I am very confused, Are you?
It’s mind boggling isn’t it.
More revalations in The Tribune today.
They are the epitome of double standards.
They pass law after law to make business and individuals accountable, yet have no concern about being accountable themselves.
Such a pity.
