I watched a video recently where the question was asked: What makes America great?
The video carries a message for all who watched it. However, for me there was much for Bahamians to learn from the answers that were given; particularly when our so called leaders tell us that The Bahamas is the greatest little country in the world.
There was time when every red blooded Bahamian believed and acted like The Bahamas was the greatest little country in the world.
But,today,is it really? Is it really the greatest little country in the world when successive political administrations have failed to unite the Bahamian People?
Is it the greatest little country in the world when the national academic average continues to float between D- and D?
Is it the greatest little country in the world when successive administrations have failed to recognize that much of the crime and accompanying social dislocation transcends politics and are crying out for national and not a political approach.
Is The Bahamas the greatest little country in the world when the vast majority of Bahamian students are functionally illiterates upon graduation from high school?
Is The Bahamas the greatest little country in the world when each political party has its list of wards of the state and label them as consultants and representatives of the state to foreign countries?
Is The Bahamas the greatest little country in the world when loyalty to country and the state is always trumped by loyalty to party?
Is The Bahamas the greatest little country in the world when the vast majority of students who go abroad to complete their education refuse to return?
Is The Bahamas the greatest little country in the world when there are so many Bahamians have packed up and left The Bahamas for the pursuit of a better way of life?
Is The Bahamas the greatest little country in the world when its forward thrust is stymied by political tribalism and cannibalism?
Is The Bahamas the greatest little country in the world when many of us has much to say about Donald J. Trump, but remain tight lipped about the behaviour of our local national leaders?
The list can go on ad infinitum….However, the question still reverberates: Is The Bahamas still the greatest little country in the world?……
There is the saying pride goes before fall. If we do not wake up and come to grips with those things that prevent us from dealing with the reality of what confronts us as a country and as a people, great will be the fall of the "greatest little country in the world."
