On Sunday I lost not only a distant cousin but a friend.

Larry suffered the effects of a debilitating heart issue quietly and with dignity.

He leaves behind a wonderful family; his wife Joanne, daughters Aliya Carey and Casey Smith and son-in-law Matthew Carey.

Larry would always tell you what was on his mind without fear or favour. We would argue like cat and dog, well lets say differ on approaches to solving public matters. We were more like siblings than friends, but our relationship remained strong throughout.

Over the years he offered his help with Rotary, The Nassau Institute and other personal matters I was involved with through Media Enterprises Ltd. His work was always exemplary and he and his wife Joanne provided lots of great advice.

Larry and Joanne were a formidable team in business and their personal lives and two of the most decent people I know and count as friends.

As Joanne said Sunday night, they were married for 35 years but working together every day they had a 70 year relationship. We wish her plenty love and trust the fond memories will comfort her.

Those of us that knew Larry more closely have lost a friend with a huge heart, fierce debater, and someone who could be counted on to give the unvarnished truth as he saw it. Society has lost a great writer and intellect.

My wife and I will always miss you Larry. Safe travels my friend.
