Why is government spending within its means called austerity? Seems like common sense to me and the state of Florida is proving it, not unlike Montreal, Quebec.
I found the following article on a friends page.
"A new study just published by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University ranks Florida as the fiscally healthiest of all states—the product of decades of restraint."
Ah, but you say Government services have to be cut if they spend less. Well that may not be the case as we will see.
"Is Florida short-changed on state government services? I have a colleague who moved to Florida a few years ago from New York and before that lived in California. Despite the state’s fiscal conservatism, he told me, he could not see any evidence that he was getting less in the way of government services in Florida than in those high-spending states. Take a Florida vacation and see for yourself if we seem starved of government services."
The article goes on.
"Ironically, high-income and high-tax states tend to be the least fiscally healthy."
Well maybe we need to change to income tax you say? But…
"… there is some evidence to suggest that the combination of term limits and the absence of a state personal income tax contributes to Florida’s fiscal success."
Maybe we should ask the Mercatus Center to evaluate The Bahamas "Fiscal Health"? Who knows they might provide some good pointers.
So fiscal responsibility can bring lower taxes and economic growth that benefit society.
