I always find it interesting to compare the style of commentary of politicians when they are in opposition and when they are in the government.
Take Mr. Jerome Fitzgerald for example.
When in opposition he was one of the most vociferous politicians. So much was wrong and he and his party had all the answers to fix them.
He was particularly vocal about foreign labour and paving companies here carrying out road work.
When the PLP was elected and he became a minister the now infamous oil spill at one of the local gas stations of thousands of gallons of fuel into the water table of his constituency, he was silent.
Now the Minister of Education he’s suggested “The teachers are doing all they can and the ministry is doing everything they can. The government is providing resources like no other government has ever provided before to ensure that the students are given every opportunity are improved.” yet results have only seen “marginal improvements”.
Yet now there are complaints at how his Ministry has changed the format of examination results so very limited information is available for public scrutiny.
I am often reminded of a statement Dr. Michael Walker of the Fraser Institute always used:
"If it matters measure it."
Is one to assume that now he’s Minister of Education he does not wish to be under the same scrutiny as the former Minister? It certainly appears so.
Too bad. But I no longer fall for Mr. Fitzgerald’s apparent false display of integrity.
Meanwhile our children continue to suffer under the public educational system.
