The Race Card

“It baffles me that people still think this way despite years of progress and development in this country. We are beyond all of this, the voters have shown that they are beyond it, so the politicians should do likewise and campaign on skill and ability and not race.” Brent Symonette

The comments above represent both ends of the spectrum of race matters in The Bahamas.

Mr. Miller’s comment was used to make the leadership appear racist against their own people in the recent changes at BEC. What we refer to as the black crab syndrome.

Mr. Symonette’s comments are in response to the report that a black politician accused a white politician of being racist because he might prefer a different black leader for his political party.

At times the barrage against the minority white population, particularly at election time is not only tiring it is disgraceful in this day and age.

But it’s not only in politics where this occurs. The recent behaviour of a black quarterback after the Super Bowl was condemned and people suggested the complaints about his behaviour would not have been as severe if he was white.

If as Dr. Martin Luther King encouraged, we judge each other by the content of our character things can’t help but improve.
