Conflicts of interest appearing in the house of cards

image from www.getactivedesign.comThe last few weeks have the appearance of conflict of interest has been radiating from the Baha Mar "fiasco".

First we have the Attorney General, whose family allegedly owns five stores in the Baha Mar development, travelling to China to negotiate with the Chinese Government over the gridlock.

Then she returns home to take umbrage with the developer that was invited by her government to invest here.

After that she takes sides with the Chinese government – construction firm and bank when she should remain independent.

Second we have the Prime Minister, who is allegedly friends with the developer, who is said to have encouraged the development, also taking umbrage and siding with the Chinese government.

Then he encourages an apparent takeover of the developers shareholding in Baha Mar – forced liquidation. Also taking sides with the Chinese when he should be impartial.

He goes on to take the current leadership of the Bahamas Chamber out by offering to include his firm as a possible liquidator. It's also difficult to see how the head of the Chamber could accept such a position?

I realise that, according to the gospel of the present government, only people other than them and their supporters would be involved in conflicts of interest, but in just a couple weeks the house of cards seems to be coming apart at the seams.

Who knows what will come to light when more details are revealed during the Delaware Chapter 11 proceedings and the Bahamas Supreme Court/Liquidation actions.

There's an awful lot riding on this but it seems political maneuvering will add to the growing list of problems.
