KPMG Bahamas reviews the government’s mid-year budget

Abaco Storm

Gathering storm or just continual deterioration?

Other than the politically correct "stuff" to their review of the government's mid-year 2014-15 national budget, they point out that:

"In our review of the full year budget, we noted that the “elephant in the room” was and remains Government expenditure and questioned whether the measures being taken were sufficiently aggressive.

"Performance for the first 6 months indicates that expenditure has been managed within budget, however we continue to believe that the budget is far greater than it should be relative to the services actually being delivered.

"There are much larger gains to be made in reducing expenses and increasing transparency and accountability. It is pleasing to note that the Government has embarked or is embarking on various initiatives to reign in expenditure and achieve more Value for Money from what it spends money on.

What's so curious is how government speaker after speaker claims they are restoring fiscal discipline all the while they make no pretense to even present a balanced budget.

Not that this should surprise us. This has been the diatribe for decades. All the while the country's fiscal position is deteriorating.

The question that comes front and centre to my mind is when will the rhetoric change and they begin to focus on reality?

Live in hope and die in despair?
