On Saturday 3rd. January, 2015, I accompanied my wife to Phil's Food Store on Gladstone Road and then to Xtra Valu Food Store on Thompson Boulevard; at neither store did I see a single government sign warning/reminding customers VAT was now in effect and similarly; in neither store, did I see a single gross price for any article for sale, all prices were still the net price and a single line item on the receipts showed the VAT 7.5% calculation. I don't know if any of the products we bought we, in fact, 0%-rated, but it didn't matter because everything was included for the calculation at the full rate. The argument used by the management at Xtra Valu was ludicrous in the extreme, "we haven't had time to getting the pricings right" sorry, sunshine, but you've had more than 6 months to get "the pricings right."
It is contrary to Bahamian Consumer Law to display one price on the article or shelf and charge a higher price at check-out, anybody want to join me with a class action suit? Incidentally that happened in the UK, when VAT was first introduced there, and the retailers lost and had to reimburse the VAT charged to the customer, but the store still had to pay to the VATman.
A seriously pissed
