Abuse of taxpayer dollars, the PHA and the way forward

GomezThe recent "Public Hospitals Authority scandal" is very revealing.

Certain, shall we say, short-comings of people are exposed at the drop of a hat, yet others are held up for months after audits and board reviews and more. By the time Cabinet gets to review it, if they haven't already done so, society moves on and the "scandal" is swept under the carpet.

At least that seems to be the pattern over decades now.

Police charges are seldom made, if ever, and the public is lucky if the alleged wrong doers are even moved from their position where they abused their privilege.

With a track record like this, why should taxpayers believe that the government "will do the right thing"?

If our government (that is PLP or FNM) do not bring the alleged perpetrators to justice we can only expect a further slide into the abyss of corruption and lawlessness.

It should not matter if the person(s) responsible are corrupt Police Officers, Judges, Politicians, Business people or the common man, justice must be seen to be done if decent citizens are not to give up hope.

Surely populism is no longer enough to build the nation? It is time to damn the political costs and if these perpetrators are PLP's, they must fall. If they are FNM, they must fall.

When the people can have the confidence that whichever group is in power "will do the right thing", our nation will turn a corner to being more than, well, a banana republic.

If Dr. Gomez is serious about doing the right thing, he will release the report to the public by tabling it in the House of Assembly (HOA), and if no criminal charges are laid he should use his HOA privilege to speak out against the corruption that would cover up the alleged abuses of taxpayer money.

Stand and say, enough is enough Dr. Gomez, and many of us will stand with you.

You can always say you were living up to your pledge as outlined in the PLP's Charter for Governance. That is, you will place the interest of the Country before any personal interest; and to do whatever you can to help move the Country “upward, forward and onward… together” – specifically to help build a unity of purpose among all Bahamians; and more…

Time will show just how revealing this all will be.
