My dear friend, Mrs. Joan Thompson, gave me a copy of Peter Foster's excellent book and it's a barn burner.
Fast paced, stacked with facts and loads of dot connecting about Adam Smith and as the subheading says "The Psychology of Anti-Capitalism.
Here's a telling quote about the "great recession":
"All that governments’ best and brightest did to “save” the world from crisis was like Gordon Brown to clumsily throw huge amounts of taxpayers’ money, and taxpayers’ obligations in the form of government debt, at the problem; organize panicky bailouts; and recommend more and bigger oversight, thus not merely delaying dealing with underlying issues, but expanding the moral hazard that would ensure future crises. Government could only “bail out” capitalism because it knew or desperately hoped that capitalism would bail out government. Politicians who had any knowledge of Adam Smith were no doubt praying that he was right in suggesting that private effort and initiative would compensate for “absurd” policy prescriptions. What made many of those prescriptions absurd was their failure to grasp both that the Invisible Hand is perhaps the most powerful and beneficent systemic force in human history, and that when you bite it, it always bites back."
