At the Nassau institute we're guided by one of Dr. Milton Friedman's famous quotes and I'm beginning to wonder if The Bahamas present fiscal and debt "crisis" have not reached the level where we are living it?
Dr. Friedman said:
“Only a crisis – actual or perceived – produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes the politically inevitable.”
And now, not only is the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce, Coalition for Responsible Taxation talking about them but Punch Columnist Catherine Kelly is citing papers by Mr. Maurice McTigue and others at the Mercatus Center.
This is great news. The more these rational arguments are placed before the public, the sooner we might see the mantle of fiscal responsibility taken up in a serious manner by the government.
