Bradley Roberts. Political myth maker?

image from www.thenassauguardian.comIn a speech late last year, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the PLP, Mr. Bradley Roberts, said;

"The policies of the PLP government created the modern Bahamas beginning with Majority Rule, Independence, Bahamianization policy, Central Bank, College of The Bahamas, Industrial Training Center (now BTVI), BAIC, BMC, Bahamasair, RBDF, Bank of The Bahamas, Bahamas Development Bank, NIB and the list goes on and on."

Of course if we analyse the list we find loads of economic problems, waste of taxpayer money and misrepresentation starting with Bahaminianization, through the ITC/BTVI, BAIC, BMC, Bahamasair, Bank of The Bahamas, Bahamas Development Bank and NIB.

He went on to say "the vision and values and the fundamental philosophy of the PLP reflected in its public policies are timeless and to date have clearly stood the test of time."

Obviously many of these so called institutions have not stood the test of time if we are honest with each other.

He closed his speech by saying:

"I call for balance, intellectual honesty and constructive engagement on national issues as this is the only productive way forward. Please be reminded that we are all stakeholders with vested interests in the success of this country."

It's too bad Mr. Roberts does not take his own advise. Spinning political myths in the face of so many failed or failing economic policies is disingenuous, to be kind.

Suffice it to say it is immoral in the least, and criminal in the extreme, how tax dollars have been wasted and debt loaded onto taxpayers. Future generations will not be kind to us.

    I have always said after Bradley finally retires from his hitch with the PLP, he’ll become the best fictional writer the Bahamas has ever seen.

    If everything is so fine, how come the government is so financially broke?? Could it be the result of an irresponsibility, corrupt and depraved government?? It wasn’t the private sector that got the country into this economic mess, it was a free-wheeling government that spent, taxed and borrowed its way into near financial bankruptcy.. Government acted like a maverick gambler borrowing and spending on investments that were destined to fail in the long run.. Much of this spending was highly politicized and characterized by political favoritism and outright corruption.. It took just over forty years to reach the point of no financial return back to normalcy..
    Now our nation must confront and suffer the painful consequences of VAT which will be the catalyst and driver of increasing public poverty and eventually dependency.. With rapidly rising prices raising the cost-of-living in the short run and Japanese-style stagflation in the long run, the economic outlook appears to be a potential disaster in the making.. Lets face the facts, our financial services sector continues to decline as outside pressures continue to take its toll.. Our largest sector, tourism, is falling on difficult times as we transcend from a stopover destination to a cruse ship destination.. As hotel occupancy rates decline, the government’s only answer is to build more and costly hotel rooms at a time we are being prices out of the market.. If we are betting on the Asian tourist market, we better not forget the recent experience with the Japanese tourist market.. Here today, gone tomorrow will leave us with closings, cutbacks and thousand of empty, overpriced hotel rooms.. Perhaps it is time to carefully rethink our strategic positions in these two vital economic sectors..
    VAT is not the answer by forcing hotel visitor costs to increase by 10 to 15 percent.. With business operating costs rising by well over 15 percent, there is little incentive or reason for the private sector to invest capital and increase employment in an inflationary, no growth economy.. Economic growth is a function of investment and not failed Keynesian tax and spend policies which never really work.. Wake up Bahamas, our time and destiny is running out..

    From all of Mr. Roberts tirades we can come only to one conclusion, HE IS ONE HATEFUL SORRY S.O.B.

  4. Tradewinds's avatar Tradewinds says:

    No, he is a politician who knows how to play the crooked game of politics.. Lets face it, he has been more effective and perhaps even more deceitful than his opposite number.. Like all politicians, his only interest is his party’s interest and to hell with the National Interest of the country.. That is why we are in the financial mess we are in..
