Enemies of The Bahamas?

FlagsDear Editor,

While I don’t think that the United States Government has any more right to meddle in our internal affairs than we in theirs, the repeated allegations of brutality at the Carmichael Detention Center are well documented, and if substantiated should not be condoned by our Government nor any right thinking Bahamian.

In self-defense of his conduct in the ongoing Cuban detainee debacle Minister Mitchell stated, “I have never met a more unpatriotic, un-Bahamian group than the FNM. They opposed Independence and now they are siding with enemies of the Bahamas against Bahamians.”

Would the Minister, or his boss, kindly enlighten us when exactly members of the United States Congress and members of the Cuban American community became enemies of the State? Or does this state of war only exist in the Minister’s own mind?

Sincerely yours,

A patriotic but not bamboozled Bahamian

The Conditions at the Detention center, and at the Prison for that matter are well documented and known,
Deplorable at best, horrific at worst.
Our problem is in part a complete immersion in our own game, in our own small pond. (mud puddle actually)
While lofty principals and Policies are touted, we fall short at the personal, party and national level.
Neither party, nor the the Governments they form, nor the people who support either wholeheartedly or unquestioningly,
can look objectively at our realities external to the game.
A badly played team sport with no half time or reassessment between bouts of mayhem and distraction.
The side shows garner more passion than the intended purpose of Governing.

Seems like in the Bahamas we have “Passion” for all the wrong things. Passion for what is right is long gone.

I WOULD THAT SOMEONE WOULD EXPLAIN TO ME- WHEN IT BECAME THE POSTURE OF ANY SOVERIGN STATE TO NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS AND CRIMINALS….
THE ACT OF IMPOSING ONESSELF INTO ANOTHERS HOME/NATION
WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION IS BURGLURY;AND SHOULD BE RESPONDED TO AS SUCH..
THUS, THE BAHAMIAN PEOPLE THEROUGH THEIR ELECTED DO NOT HAVE A CASE TO ANSWER
    …..
THIS COLLECTIVE EXUBERANCE FROM PROTESTING CUBANS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS AT FIDEL CASTROS’ PALACE WOULD BE THE RESOLUTION TO THIS WHOLE PROBLEM;AND I RECCOMEND IT ALTOGETHER….
I APPLAUD THE COURAGE OF THE MINISTER, WHO ECHOS MY EVERY SENTIMENT……
THIS POMPOUS ARROGANCE OF ILLEGAL MIGRANTS IS UNWELCOME AND I CALL FOR THEIR INSTANT REPATRIATION FROM THESE FAIR SHORES….

I think you miss some important points “My Tax Dollars”.
If your “Minister” has not told the truth about the alleged beatings, as it appears, I cannot support dishonesty in our government.
I’m with you, however, with repatriating illegal immigrants or allowing them onto “freedom” in any country willing to accept them. It costs Bahamian taxpayers thousands of dollars per annum to feed and house them, however inadequately we do so.
What I do not support is alleged brutalisation of people under the control of our Government – either people in our prison, or in our detention centre. And neither should any Minister of our Government that has signed on to Human Rights Treaties attempt to cover it up as alleged.
Even the Prime Minister has contradicted the Minister whose courage you applaud.
Maybe the minister’s judgement is clouded from dining at the dictator of Cuba’s palace?
