While Members of Parliament are filibustering their own Bill, The Bahamas is going to "hell in a hand basket" as the old saying goes.
It reminds me of one of H. L. Mencken's famous quotes that, "The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins…"
How on earth do the follies of a previous administration make it acceptable for this parliament to do similar things?
All this rhetoric has arisen in an effort to distract attention from recent revelations that a foreigner has put the government in a difficult spot with his pronouncements that he's a major funder of the governing PLP, giving the impression he should get his way.
Many Bahamians might recall the uproar back in 2010 about a "foreigner" being granted permission to dredge a harbor on his property of less than 0.0035% of the Exuma Park, yet there is stone cold silence from those same folks on Nygard's property that has “almost doubled in size” – as if by magic – "from 3.25 acres in 1984 – when Mr Nygard bought it – to 6.1 acres by 2012." In fact some folks out right support the latter.
Of course Mr. Nygard is the self proclaimed foreign funder of the PLP.
Politicians of all stripes float theories, as in this case, and the people get angry with each other so the real problems affecting us have not been resolved for decades now.
So now the political "dogs are let loose" to attack people that were apparently dealt with by the long arm of the law in an effort to slide approvals through for alleged damage to our country.
To quote Mencken again, “It is hard to believe that a man is telling the truth when you know that you would lie if you were in his place.”
When those that hold the government cannot take the high road and legitimately defend their position with facts about the item at hand, it's usually not the blue cheese one can smell.
By the way, where is the Prime Minister in all this? Shouldn't he be leading on this as it's his integrity on the line.
This is not the first time an Opposition party has used political grandstanding in an attempt to derail what might be good in long term.
It appears to me that the leaders of the PLP and FNM need to receive a good private talking to so they can recoup their logic.
Shouldn’t a more appropriate headline have read:
“The PLP and FNM in self-destruct mode?”
Now that you mention it, YES!
