Back in September 2010, the PLP, then in Opposition, suggested that Mr. Earl Deveaux (FNM), Minister of the Environment, was in a conflict of interest for accepting rides in an investors helicopter that had been granted the right to dredge a harbour in his property.
In fact here's what they said:
"The PLP condemns the behavior of Minister Earl Deveaux for recently accepting free rides on a luxury helicopter owned by an investor with an application before the cabinet for approval; one of the free rides was to Abaco to attend a film screening.
"The PLP further condemns the minister's arrogant and dismissive attitude toward the whole matter. When questioned about the free rides and in the face of overwhelming… "
Now about three years later and the PLP are the government, the FNM are making similar charges about several PLP Cabinet Ministers being hosted by "a billionaire" that seeks Government approval for his property that has “almost doubled in size” – as if by magic – "from 3.25 acres in 1984 – when Mr Nygard bought it – to 6.1 acres by 2012." Something being referred to as accretion.
But here's Mr. Perry Christie's (PLP Prime Minister) response to the allegations about them:
"…The PLP leader said he finds it interesting that when former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham was in power, he could fly wherever with whomever and it is not a problem."
"But as soon as PLP ministers hang out with a billionaire it becomes an issue."
How's that for an about face?
You dare not do it, but it's okay for us to do it.
Can any and all ill advised behaviour by the political class really be justified like this?
