How special to read Thomas Jefferson’s words of political wisdom and warning on this our 40th Anniversary of Bahamian Independence.. His authorship of the Declaration of Independence for the thirteen American colonies in 1776 changed the British Empire hence forth even up to our Independence in 1973..
Many outstanding scholars and historians find Jefferson to be the leading political mind of the 18th century but despite his remarkable achievements and accomplishments , Jefferson’s character and intellect has always been the subject of controversial criticism and even questionable political slander.. Even today the forces of historical revisionism and so-called political correctness have focused criticism on tainting Jefferson’s life and character.. The same is true for Washington, Adams, Hamilton, Madison and other America foundation fathers.. Much of this tainted and negative criticism has created an “air of lies” making many of these former heroes into men of questionable character and intent..
In Jefferson’s case, historian and religious scholar David Barton has answered the revisionists with the publication of the text, The Jefferson Lies, Exposing the Myths you’ve Always Believed About Thomas Jefferson.. Based on over 100,000 primary sources and secondary sources, Barton uncovers the truth about Jefferson personal life, his deeply engrained beliefs and convictions.. Citing over well 700 detailed footnotes, the author puts Jefferson into historical perspective of the historical times he lived in..
For myself, the book has given me a more positive perspective of the trials and challenges that Jefferson confronted as he rose to political prominence, international recognition and intellectual immortality.. As could be expected, several historical revisionists have been quick to criticize the Jefferson Lies with shallow and trite criticism directed at the author and little to do with refuting the factual nature of the book..
For those interested in American colonial history, The Jefferson Lies is must reading.. It is easy to distort the truth, but the underlying truth is there for discovery.. David Barton’s book is an eye opener for seekers of the underlying truth.. VERATAS
