When last have we heard a constructive debate about any major issue affecting the country in Parliament?
How about debates on the National Debt, crime, the Educational system, illegal immigration or even the prison to name but a few?
Oh we get lots of verbal jousting and attempts at political point scoring from the "Honourable Members" but I can't recall the last time there was a civil discussion where potential solutions were discussed.
Can you?
If Parliament is leading by example is there any wonder we appear to be a sinking ship?
Parliament is nothing more than a rubber stamp for the proposed policies the political party that was elected to power.. It reflects only the self-interest of the ruling party and NOT the National Interest (the real interest) of our country.. This is why the National Interest must be of paramount significance when bills are being introduced to Parliament..
To expect constructive debate on important National issues is only a pipe dream or an unrealistic notion at best.. Constructive debate requires detailed preparation where all sides of an issue must be fully examined.. This requires acute judgment and intellectual competence which is beyond capacity of our parliamentarians who are only motivated by party self-interest and their own personal interests.. This is the great failing of the Westminster System and self-serving democracy in general.. Just look for a minute at the Parliamentary system of governance in Great Britain and you can only conclude that this so-called democratic, parliamentary system of government has become a failure..
Hopefully this will be recognized as we begin to propose changes to our nation’s Constitution.. But we all know that when it comes to representative government hope springs eternal..
It would be nice if before we start changing the Constitution,
we would actually read, comprehend and follow it.
Debate and change come after you are standing on solid ground.
Tis we, the Bahamian people, and our Elected and appointed, who have failed the country,
our Judges, Police force and the legal “Fraternity” who have failed the Rule Of Law,
Does one move the goal posts because one is losing the Soccer game?…………
Lower the hoop? hobble the other team?
Re-Writing rules we don’t even follow in spirit or action is not going to cure anything.
Potentially it can make things much worse.
Oracle, I agree with you 100%.
Having said that, they are still going to change it, so we had better at least make submissions?
If you think they would be honestly regarded go right ahead.
Unfortunately the people we elect, and those they appoint,
don’t want to consider anything other than their own agenda, gravy train, status quo or prestige.
Until we recognize lunacy (and or idiocy)for what it is and what it is doing to us as a country,
It will only get worse.
To fix it means calling names, calling out people,
highlighting the specific errors and indiscretions.
