The Bahamas Prime Minister and his NIB dilemma

by Rick Lowe

According to both daily newspapers, The Tribune and the Nassau Guardian, of Saturday, December 1, 2012, Mr. Perry Christie (PLP), Prime Minister wants the advice of the Attorney General before making a decision in the National Insurance Board (NIB) uproar.

First, a damning report by the new Chairman, Mr. Gregory Moss (PLP), from Grand Bahama, on the alleged transgressions of the director, Algernon Cargill,  was 'somehow' leaked to the press, and now Mr. Cargill has filed a suit and the affidavit alleges serious breaches against the Chairman.

Mr. Christie, a lawyer by profession, indicated he wants the advice of the Attorney General as he is not going to be his own lawyer in this matter.

Yes, Mr. Christie, terminating employees is very difficult, even with evidence, and removing political cronies from positions and possibly seeking redress if the allegations are true, is no easier I would imagine, but as a lawyer and the man with over all responsibility, you have to make the decision, no matter the advice of the Attorney General.

Compromise of the public purse as alleged is a very serious matter and there should be no doubt what must be done if they are true.

I seriously doubt that Mr. Cargill would compromise himself as alleged, but political cronies put in top positions like the newly appointed chairman for example, have long used taxpayer money as if it's theirs, not only here but throughout the world. Let's hope this is not the case, but if it's as alleged, the chips must fall.

Nobody said being the bigger boss was all peaches and cream.
