Nico Grant on web shops

by Rick Lowe

The following quotes on web shop licensing are from Mr. Nico Grant (FNM), as published in the Nassau Guardian, November 22, 2012:

"The intent was to provide computers and access to the Internet for persons who for one reason or the other did not have computers in their homes.

“These were legal businesses that received business licences under the FNM administration. They were subsequently turned into full-fledged illegal gaming rooms."

The correct action was taken in giving the gambling shops business licences and now to suggest he was oblivious to the gaming rooms is, well, naivety at it's best or disingenuousness at it's worst.

Throughout history people gamble. In first world countries today it is normal activity.

Should the government choose to enforce laws against gambling the "numbers houses" will simply go underground once again.

Besides, "numbers" is a perfectly acceptable Bahamian tradition ever since I can remember.

Just get on with it. There are far too many pressing problems in The Bahamas today that require attention than to get hung up on this like we are.
