Back in early 2008 we were having the same debate we're having today about the release of the crime statistics.  In fact we were chiding the Minister of National Security about it here…

Eventually the Police Commissioner released the data.

Now fast forward to 2012. How can it be we're having the same discussion?

According to this Nassau Guardian story, "On Thursday, Greeslade said he was "not prepared" to release the crime statistics just yet, although he maintained that crime had decreased in the first half of the year."

We applaud the Police if crime has been reduced although without the statistics, how are we to confirm what we're being told?

Maybe after some further thought the Commissioner Greenslade will change his mind? I sure hope so. As pointed out in 2008, hiding the numbers gives the public no more comfort than releasing them. Besides, how is the public to gauge the job the Police are doing on our behalf?

Having said all that, I beleive Mr. Greenslade is a decent man with an unenviable task who knows the right thing to do is release the information.
