Bahamas National Stadium

Rick Lowe

Well the stadium provided by the Chinese people is completed and was officially opened a few weeks ago to great fanfare. A proud moment indeed.

Now reality sets in. The place has to be maintained. Electricity, water, ongoing maintenance and security. What have I missed?

The stadium, the brainchild of Mr. Perry Christie and the PLP (not really, the Chinese have built them all over the region), but they approved it under their watch (2002 – 2007).

While a nice thing to have, stadiums should be funded privately, not by taxpayer dollars.

Toward this end, the FNM Government have set the stadium up as a corporation, headed by the very able Mr. LeRoy Archer.

I sincerely wish Mr. Archer and his team well, but like other government corporations I'm afraid politics will over rule common sense.

Time will tell.

Yes this is a matter for some thought. I had understood that the Chinese had promised the ongoing up-keep expenses for the Stadium but perhaps this was just talk.
