Crime – Who’s to blame?

Rick Lowe

As political speeches go, Mr. Ingraham, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, made an excellent presentation on crime, and steps his government will take in an attempt to get some control, on Monday evening of this week. Read it here…

I think he struck the right chord regarding volunteerism and the fact that this is a cross sector problem and will only be resolved with a community wide effort.

Maybe we should expect it now, but instead of offering constructive criticism on such a vital matter, – that is not an FNM, PLP or DNA problem, but a Bahamian one, – Mr. Branville McCartney had a very shallow response published in The Punch yesterday. Read his party's recommendations from some time back here…

I have not had time to read the PLP's response yet, so here's hoping it will be deeper than what seems to be the norm these days.

And I have not seen a response from the church groups yet, other than a sound bite from Rev Simeon Hall, but that should be an interesting read.

None us have the perfect answers, and it's easy to point fingers, but in this case I think Mr. Ingraham is closer than the responses seen to date.

Let's hope that on this issue, if no other, the politico's can prove that they are adults concerned about ridding our country of crime instead of their political ambitions.

There are many other areas they can grandstand on, but this should not be one.

In the final, we're all to blame for the crime.

What took him so long Rick ? Talk is cheap, very cheap.Show me,show me,show me I’m sick & tired of the talk. When you don’t enforce the law of someone pissing out in open on Montague foreshore then you can’t enforce anything.Half of it is the will to do it.

Maybe he has set a tone with his speech, but it’s not up to the political class to arrest people and try them etc.
It’s a community thing – Neighbours, Police, Courts etc.
Politicians are talkers. That’s what we seem to like :o)
Now it’s up to the community to get the job done!

GOOD article Rick… One thing seems sure…. Despite all of the talk about crime, Mr. Ingraham really has put forth a real comprehensive plan that seems tough…
I hope that the police is now preparing to go after each and every gun that may not be turned in… and regardless get them by any means necessary…. I mean any means.
We have to get tough on judges and lawyers who postpone cases all of the time. The court staff is part of the problem and that is another matter….
Looks like once more, Hubert talks and every one listens…. Yes, I agree with Dennis Pinder, it should have come earlier.. but what seem to me.. is the fact that it was a plan that was well thought out and researched.. and maybe that can be the reason..
God Bless our Country and our the officers and members of the RBPF….

    Thanks.
If Messrs Christie and McCartney have the magic wands to solve crime, why won’t they wave them if they really are concerned?
Political rhetoric with situations like this only hurts everyone in the long run.

No doubt, the court staff could give a hoot, that’s my opinion of them & it would take a lot to change it.They all act like a murder is a speeding ticket. The police, the courts & the so called prosecutors have a lot to learn, its like amateur hour all day in the courts. I will say it again, it appears to me that we cannot police ourselves,to many people know to many people.
