Government. Men and women with mystical powers?

Rick Lowe

When many people speak of the Government it's as if the individuals that are elected have some mystical power, but it's obvious they have no such thing.

So it's important to remind ourselves that they are all people just like us. Some are smart while others are not so bright. Some are hard workers, while others are lazy. Some are organized while others are disorganized. Some are good speakers while others put us to sleep. And I'm sure we can all pick these character traits out among our elected representatives.

But Sheldon Richman, editor of The Freeman, sets it out much more direct than I can in his column from last Friday:

"Government is not some higher super-competent entity like the man pretending to be the Wizard of Oz wanted the people to think he was. It’s a coercive organization of limited, flawed, and essentially ignorant men and women who, having been anointed in an election after campaigns hawking snake oil, are presumptuous enough to think they are capable of making wise decisions on our behalf."

Politicians have one thing in common, power.. The power to control the health and economic well being over the citizens they rule.. The power to rule is the absolute power to control.. These politicians have become a superior class unto themselves exercising power and authority over their subjects.. “Don’t do as I do, do as I say” has today become common practice both in the United States and the Bahamas.. Trust me I know what is best for you so do as I say.. “The Road to Serfdom” is paved with empty political promises which only consolidate political power at the expensive of individual liberty and freedom..
