Rev. C.B. Moss and Capital Punishment

Edward Hutcheson

I must take issue with Rev C B Moss, and the views that he expressed recently regarding capital punishment. If he is a man of God as he claims, the Scripture is very clear on the parameters for the enforcement of the death penalty.

He states, that Jesus wants his followers to “find it in their hearts to rise above the need to take another person’s life in retaliation”, while this is true it does not replace the responsibility of government and civil authority.

He says that the death penalty is not a deterrent, but the Scripture reminds us that if punishments is not carried out in a timely fashion, those who do such things get bolder in their actions. If a person can commit murder and be back on the streets in less two years, maybe there is some truth in what he is saying; but only in the sense that the penalty is not to be feared.

There is a scene at the Jordan where John was baptising Jesus at the beginning of His Ministry, and John was hesitant, he felt that it was Jesus who should have been baptising him, but Jesus told him, “suffer it to be so for now”.

Many do not see the life of Jesus as a double-edged sword, we see Him as a nice guy who is all about love and forgiveness, but for us to see his life as one that is fully-orbed, we must take all of the Scripture into our hearing.

The God that Mr. Moss is talking about is big enough to let this thing “play out”, He has given man dominion in this age and we are free to make some “convenient choices”. It is not enough to believe all of the convenient stuff that is in line with our social agendas.

We will be judged by what we affirm, and we will stand or fall before the masters we choose to serve. The Matt.7:23 passage reminds us that we will not be judged by what we have done; it is all about motive and the “why”. It is not enough to say we believe, if our actions do not line up with the full context of what has been revealed to us as truth; the Scripture reminds us that “even the demons believe, and tremble”.

I’m not sure if I agree with capital punishment anymore, particularly when the possibility that people might be charged with crimes they did not commit exists.
However, I believe that people charged with murder and other heinous crimes should never see freedom again unless they are proven innocent of course.

Rick i agree with you 100% percent, the high crime rate will sooner or later impact Tourism ,Bahamas economy and decling revenue would put pressure on the Bahamian dollar devaluing.

    Thanks Mr. Stuart.
That post was written by Mr. Edward Hutcheson. I do not agree with the premise for the reasons stated above.
Can law enforcement and the Judiciary be better? You bet. And these are just two reasons I do not think the death penalty is appropriate. Not to mention the fact that it is not a deterrent.

Once the facts are there that they are guilty, HANG !I have a feeling that God forbid, somebody murdered a love one of those who oppose it, they would quick enough change their minds.

  5. Dennis Pinder's avatar Dennis Pinder says:

I also think that police that protect the bastards should be hanged from the highest tree.

  6. Dennis Pinder's avatar Dennis Pinder says:

The politicians that prevent prosecution & do nothing to change the system should also be taken to task.

“Judge not others and abstain from such pronouncements until you yourself are judged and found to be righteous and true..”

  8. Dennis Pinder's avatar Dennis Pinder says:

I am not judging.I am telling you how I feel about it.Since most of these murders are done by people on bail, let them stay in prison & kill each other. That may be the only justice our family gets, oh sorry, we can’t even hope for that since they gave the accused bail & he never showed up for trial !

  9. Tradewinds's avatar Tradewinds says:

Please forgive me Mr. Pinder.. My words were in support of Edward Hutcheson who was taking issue with the pronouncements of C B Moss and not with your personal opinions.. Please understand I am most sympathetic to your position on capital punishment.. “An eye for an eye…” as the traditional saying goes..

  10. Dennis Pinder's avatar Dennis Pinder says:

    No problem, I understand

Could somebody tell me why the government of the Bahamas does not want anything to do with England & its old laws, except for the privy council. It baffles my mind. They only use it as an escape for not having to hang & we the people are getting damn tired of it.Instead of strengthening the laws, they seem to be slackening them up.Does this not concern anyone else ?
