DNA on Crime and political fundraising in The Bahamas

Rick Lowe

Well it appears the DNA have started releasing bits and pieces about what we can expect from them should they become the government of the day.

So far they'll get tough on crime by:

Amendments to laws
Enforce laws
Giving the Police the ability to do their job without interference, and
Removing impediments to capital punishment

Mr. McCartney did not discuss how the Judiciary would take this or how they will be dealt with as they are independent of the political directorate. Maybe that's for another day.

But what's so different about this "vision" for solving crime than the FNM or PLP?

So far it looks as if they've taken a line or two from the FNM and PLP's platforms. No more. No less.

By the way, enough with the rhetoric about the other political parties divulging who their contributors are. Set the example by advising the general public who the DNA contributors are.

To paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi the DNA should be the change they want to see in Bahamian politics.

I think Mr McCartney is making this all up as he goes along.

  2. Larry's avatar Larry says:

If McCartney was serious he’d name all of his financial backers publicly before demanding anybody else does. Since he didn’t he is just trying to garner more attention for himself and his larger than life ego.

They all seem to be the same to me.They will have to prove otherwise.

In the exhoratation of St. Paul when he was telling the early church of his experiences and that he was schooled by none other than Gamaliel, who we can assume most of his readers either knew or knew of.
I can only ask by whom was Branville schooled? He is just ANOTHER wanna-be and was not content to bide his time for if and when the opportunity presented itself to be leader of a major political party.
I predict they will not win a seat in the next parliament.

I would like to have all of the details as to exactly what happened at Immigration. It seemed to me like he was doing the right thing & “Bucked” the system.

  6. Rick's avatar Rick says:

Yes, his position is he bucked the system from what I’m told.
What’s the other side of the story?

  7. GQ's avatar GQ says:

    Dennis and Rick:
The sources that I have says he did not want to abide by collective decisions and wanted to make his own. This makes him a “loose cannon” and that can be dangerous. Allegedly he cursed out the PM and DPM before resigning his cabinet post.
When Bahamians are enlightened about the type of individual Mr. McCartney is they will come to know the real “Jekyll and Hyde.”

  8. Dennis Pinder's avatar Dennis Pinder says:

It would be nice to change something at immigration, why is the view of one or two in power the “Right” one.Seems to me like the view they have is NOT working, have you counted our illegals lately ? I don’t think we can count them.Somebody is making out like a bandit, it has be be something for them not to fix it, in my opinion.

  9. Rick's avatar Rick says:

I agree with you Dennis. Something must change at Immigration.
When we consider that we have left so many illegal immigrants so long that they have homes, children, and in some cases grand children here we have placed ourselves in a quandary.
The other issue is the Judiciary is independent of the “political class” according to our Constitution beside the fact of agreements with Haiti et al.
It’s not as easy as throwing them out and we are culpable.

  10. Dennis Pinder's avatar Dennis Pinder says:

So True Rick.On the other hand, we HAVE to stop more from coming & now. Some people say that Bahamians don’t want that type of work & I agree to a point but, lets get at least half of them out & then see how we do in that market. We have to make an effort & I think at the very least, Mr.McCartney was doing that.

  11. Rick's avatar Rick says:

There seems to be a leap of faith there that because he was good at PR he was actually doing something.
I’d like to see the statistics during Mr. McCartney’s brief tenure.

  12. Dennis Pinder's avatar Dennis Pinder says:

So would I.I would like to see the stats going back to Roker to compare to present day.
