On individuals being self sufficient in The Bahamas

Rick Lowe

This article by Edward Hutcheson solicited an interesting comment from a long time friend, who spoke about the need to work together to get through these tough times.

The sentence in Mr. Hutcheson's article that hit the mark for me was: "We forget that before 1967 it was okay to live at a particular level. Many persons living at that level found a way to send their children to college, children who became doctors, lawyers, accountants and prime ministers."

All this reminded me of when I lived in Canada and how the Chinese Community there, at least the few that I met, "take care of each other".

The most important way they supported each other in my opinion was with housing.

Several family members would buy a house together and all live there until the mortgage was paid. They would move on to another house and do the same thing. Before you realised they had their own houses.

While it's not so simple, I think you get my drift?

Lot's of times it seems many of us, (Bahamian's), prefer instant gratification, so our "problems" are perpetuated.

Prosperity does not happen at the snap of fingers and sometimes the best laid plans run amok and fail, but if we do not start somewhere, we will never get ahead.

What's your take?
