Penalties for Illegal Gun Possession in the Bahamas!

by Jerome Pinder

Recently Mr. Paul Thompson Sr. had a letter to the Editor of the Tribune entitled "Media can do more on crime prevention education."

For the most part I agree with Mr. Thompson and I certainly support the Royal Bahamas Police Force.  However, Mr. Thompson had this to say:

"The media can help in a campaign for a gun court to hear gun possession cases with a 21 – day period, with mandatory penalties of two years for small arms possession and five years for the Uzi, machine gun and the AK 47."

I have no problem with a gun court, but the above proposed penalties to me are a joke. Anyone found with an Uzi or AK 47, only has that for one purpose and that is to kill! We need penalties to be imposed that will send a message to those holding illegal firearms on our streets. These illegal guns on our streets are the same ones used in drive by shootings, killings, and armed robberies…

While I support the cane in such cases, I would also recommend a minimum of 10 years for illegal gun possession.

So true Jerome.Business owners should also have no problem in getting a hand gun license, if they so desire.

I believe we already have mandatory jail time for illegal gun possession.
Like all other laws, it seems to be mute, and unimplemented.

Unless of course you are a good citizen trying to protect your family, then you might have a problem.
