Mind you, I am not opposed to being more conscious of the environment but I wish there was some official tracker of government promises to see how far these grandiose plans get before the mission changes.
Many times these announcements amount to little more than hyperbole to excite a certain segment of the population.
Remember this green light bulb distribution plan?
Finally, we can announce all the great plans we wish, but without a proper cost benefit analysis they amount to little more than wish lists.
I saw the headline in the Tribune today, of course my initial thought was yeah right, not in my lifetime.
Perhaps if the government cannot afford to buy bunker fuel for BEC we will be free of fossil fuels but other than that, yet another pipe dream from yet another minister blowing smoke.
Fossil fuels are simply stored energy.
The most cost effective, redily available, portable enery source there is, even at todays prices.
For the Bahamas to become fossil fuel independent in fifteen years is not only the most ambitious of plans, but unatainable even if the government were to liquidate every piece of private asset they could find to pay for it, in addition to massive loans from who knows who.
Solar is great, same with wind and wave energy, even thermal differential in the ocean depths, but, to free us of fossil fuels?
Even at a $50 thousand a house investment, the energy generated is not enough for mindless consumption.
Which is what Bahamians are used to, even though they dread the bill.
Of course, mans ingenuity traditionally rises to the occasion in response to his need, so it is possible that some new technology or innovation will appear to save the day, but, like politically motivated promises, the talk is easy, it is the delivery they consistently fail on.
One last thought, I notice that they seem to believe that BEC can become a Green utility, something yet to happen in the first world, and completely ignore the natural growth of the alternate energy trend over the last 100 years, that of individuals providing and investing for themselves.
Thanks Chris:

In the video above one of the few power plants in the US to offer “Green Energy” stopped offering it because people didn’t want to pay more for it.
The idea in principle is a good one. How practical it is, we shall see…
Can someone tell me why in the hell don’t they put an effort like this into our crime problem, instead of all this green crap. What is more important, green or not having a safe place for tourists to come & for us to live ? It is mind boggling to me.
