“Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad.” Picewell Forbes Reprise

The following post is a letter to the Editor of The Tribune  dated October 22, 2009.

Ian Mabon

Madness, what else could account for the utterance of the MP for south Andros during convention while the matter was still under deliberation?

“Pleasant is a free woman! God still reigns PLP’s"

These from the mouth of a former senior newscaster who should definitely know better and whose statements could easily be construed as contempt of court, thank heaven for the intervention of senior Justice Allen. Sanity prevails, but at what cost?

It is common knowledge that the legal system in this country is in dire straits and is, in my opinion, already the laughingstock of the region resulting from the verdicts handed down by juries in a number of recent cases, including murder, which appeared to be based on nothing more than “national pride” or us against them. The fact that a certain political party and a number of their members in particular, notwithstanding the official apology, have long felt and acted as if they were above the law simply adds credence.

It will indeed be a happy day when the ignorant among us, politicians included, understand that God did not give this land to any particular political party, group, nor race of people, and that politics and discrimination, national, racial or otherwise have no place in our legal system.

As a just reward for his inanities, and instead of the taxpayers, the member for south Andros should be made to foot the bill for the ensuing retrial.

And then the Justice lets him off with a warning.
Here is a man that is a lawmaker (Member of Parliament) basically walking on such a serious matter.
    Public ridicule not withstanding.
I wonder what would have happened if they found a juror “texting” a message as was implied? Would they have gotten off with a warning? Of course not.
    I’m sick of the cronyism.
You don’t pay your NIB tax for years, you are given a break.
You don’t pay your property tax for years, you are given a break.
The list goes on and on.
Is there any wonder so many of us have lost our “give a damn”?
