The Bahamas and freedom of government information

Rick Lowe

This post over at the Barbados Free Press blog reminded me of all the times I've read about the commitment of our political class to to do something similar.

Oh they write about it in their respective manifesto's and talk it up on the campaign trail but just seem so busy passing laws to keep the general public "in check" that they just can't pass laws that do the same to themselves

Canada has a freedom of information Act or Access to Information Act as they call it.

They even have a Right to Know website.

So what's the challenge for our politico's to copy the Canadian Access to Information Act like they copy legislation from every where else?

Come on FNM, now is your chance to get on with it.

Perhaps the last thing in the world, the government of the Bahamas wants is transparency and open government.. At election time all the political parties talk a good line, but promises are empty and then “gone with the wind”.. What the masses don’t know won’t hurt them, so it is back to business as usual.. But this is just a page out of failed American political democracy..The Obama administration promised an open and transparent government.. Such promises are meaningless without implementation and performance.. What about the President’s own openness and transparency.. Nothing is known about the man, where he was born, his college records and are there any legal writings or essays while head of the Harvard Law Review.. He has spent close to a million dollars to cover up his twisted past.. Is the transparency or a new form of democratic elitism?? You decide.. There appears to be a far greater political agenda being played out based on political ideology which may be “change” to Mr. Obama, but change that no true American would ever “hope” for.. Transparency in government is fiction just plane and simple.. Is this the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning.. Only time will tell..
