Long overdue shake up at Bahamas Customs?

by Rick Lowe

After decades of allegations of corruption in The Customs Department of the Bahamas Government it appears that a shake up is about to materialise according to The Tribune this morning.

Reports are that some senior Customs officers will be superseded in their positions by younger officers.

Of course, Fred Mitchell is in the mix defending the officers that will apparently be kept on the job but will not be able to advance to more senior positions according to the report.

It amazes me how how he (Mitchell) can find his way into the middle of this having been Minister of Foreign Affairs, and having responsibility for the Public Service when he was in the PLP Cabinet, where he accomplished little more than a display of the photographs taken of him when he held those positions.

The allegations of corruption at Customs are nothing new, and when finally a government has the political will to attempt to stem the tide, Mr. Mitchell's defending the indefensible seems an immense disservice to future generations.

It's a further mockery to go against a clean up of the alleged corruption within the Customs Department as a Member of Parliament when Mr. Mitchell's colleague, Mr. Jackson Ritchie, has confirmed he avoided paying millions in Customs receipts.

Why don't some of the so called leaders of our country get it?
