Random Thought One – We must stand up for free markets
Peter Hoskin at The Spectator says:
We must stand up for free markets.
As today's the first anniversary of the Northern Rock nationalisation, I thought I'd re-read Matthew Parris's stunning defence of free markets in this week's magazine. I recommend CoffeeHousers read the whole thing, if they haven't already, but here's a key passage:
"So amid all the doom-mongering and recanting, I have an assertion to make. The market has not failed. The present collapse is evidence that the market is working. Confidence bubbles are an inherent feature of a free market system. Panics — confidence vacuums — are an inherent feature too. The test of the theory of market capitalism is whether the system provides from within itself the means to prick both.
It does. The first — a confidence bubble — has been pricked. We are now sucking ourselves the other way: into a confidence vacuum. In time this too will be pricked. The market will steady."

Random Thought Three – Stimulus Watch
The so called economic "Stimulus" plan in the US is an intriguing process to say the least.
Stimulus Watch is a web site "to help the new administration keep its pledge to invest stimulus money smartly, and to hold public officials to account for the taxpayer money they spend."

I see our Prime Minister has borrowed $150 million
from the Chinese Government on our behalf.
I wonder if this is how he will pay for his “stimulus” program?
It amounts to $500 a head for every man woman and child resident, but of course, will not be distributed in that fashion.
Just in the nick of time, for obvious political reasons, the Government can “assist” the people with their financial (?) hardship.
But at what political cost to ourselves in, for example, the U.N.? E.U. trade agreements? Cariforum?
It remains to be seen and unfortunately may never be seen by we the people of the Bahamas.
