Dr. Norman Girvan, a Caribbean Scholar was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Havana. Of course in his obligatory acceptance speech he lauds his hero Fidel Castro.
I looked to add a statement to his blog, but could not find the comment box.
Here's what I would have posted if it had been possible.
Dear Dr. Girvan:
"While you are obviously enamoured with Castro and his henchmen, (which is fair enough if you believe he prevailed over what is portrayed as the evil monster, the United States), you have obviously overlooked the Cuban regimes own evil deeds.
It's not clear to me why the US trade is so important to Castro if he despises what America stands for?
While I disagree with any embargo, Castro has made a mockery of his own revolution.
Didn't Castro promise to:
A.) “I will lead the country to economic and cultural progress without sacrificing individual freedoms.
B.) “There is little room in Cuba for communist ideas.”
C.) Cuban rebels didn’t preach class war.
D.) Promise to restore the Constitution of 1940
E.) The promise of free elections
Source of qoutes:
To prop up the Castro regime with your admiration is discouraging. The Cuban people deserve their freedom from the revolutions shackles of duplicity."
Sincerely,
