Bahamas economic issues and help for the marginalised

by Rick Lowe

Things are getting tough all around town with layoffs mounting.

I remain convinced that this is the time for us to come together as a community and help each other without the government being involved.

On a recent trip to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this idea was solidified in a conversation with a fellow Bahamian that lives there. He is convinced that the help has to be local as well.

Those of us that remain employed can start by supplying food to neighbourhood collection points or even provide direct financial support to families we might know that are falling on hard times.

Obviously, this not so humble blogger does not think we need the government to do it, because after all, the government is us, and they have already burdened future generations with enough already.

I'm convinced we can do it and get through this recession or depression better off for having assisted each other directly, rather than punting to "the government".

In other words, the Subsidiarity Principle works best.

What do you think?
