When I read the heading in The Tribune Business of Friday, October 17, 2008 I was beside myself. How could Bahamas Ferries have the nerve to ask the government to build a terminal for them?
That’s like owners of sports teams asking the state to build new stadiums for them. It’s simply not right.
I was pleasantly surprised when I read the entire article to read Mr. Khaalis Rolle’s comments that:
"We’re not asking government for any funding; we’ll find it ourselves, like any good corporate citizen. Our facilities do not represent who we are, and customers are complaining about it on a daily basis."
And, he is absolutely correct. While he did not say it, Potter’s Cay is an absolute disgrace. But it’s nothing new. The vendors are a law unto themselves. Visitors park where ever and however they like. Not to mention the littering, language pile of rotting conch and fish slop.
So where is Bahamian pride?
We find it in pockets throughout the country, but with people like Mr. Rolle around, maybe we can begin to feel that the old Bahamian ways are coming back into play.
Yes, the mountain is a long climb, but if the government gets out of the way, I believe we will begin to see some progress.
