Following on from yesterday’s post the fear of crime here in Nassau is palpable and is the lead topic on the lips of most people you talk to.
The first response from most people is that our politicians have to do something and the government is letting the society and their supporters down with their apparent inactivity.
Mind you, the politician’s pledge to solve every problem for everyone, so they should not be surprised when the electorate expect to hand their personal responsibility off to them.
The new Police Commissioner who came in on a platform of zero tolerance seems to have had the wind taken out of his sails for some reason.
But the question we should ask ourselves is what each of us are doing about crime?
In addition, are we reporting suspicious characters in our neighbourhood or around our work place?
Are we reporting our co-workers when they steal time or products from our employers?
Are we reporting our family members that come home with objects that we know they do not have the money to buy?
The list of questions seems endless, and the list of solutions seems oh so short, but as people are asking what can be done, here’s a few suggestions:
* Respect the victim’s rights and make criminals pay full restitution.
* Hold all criminals responsible for their actions.
* Double the police resources available for crime prevention without any additional government spending.
* Reduce the number of criminals at large on our streets.
* Defend the most effective crime deterrent available, the private ownership of guns.
* Create jobs, end welfare dependence, and improve education.
These ideas are not mine, but those of the Libertarian Party in the US.

One thing is certain, we cannot continue along doing the same things we have been doing for the last thirty years.
A couple other things that we can count on is the politicians do not have a magic wand, and they do not have all the answers.
With this in mind we had better all be prepared to take personal responsibility for our families and ensure to the best of our abilities that we obey the law and understand our role as a society.
I could not agree more Rick. With all the crime thats going on around us what are the politicians talking about, oral sex for Gods sake ! This almost seems unreal to me. I say give all business people that want a handgun a license for one.I really believe we need a foreign police force, there is no doubt, along with a very different court system & soon.
