I received a phone call earlier this week from a very polite lady informing me that it was time for NIB’s annual audit of my account for our housekeeper.
Having just gone through this process last year when it was uncovered that I had not paid a couple months and NIB had not applied a couple payments, my back was immediately up.
I knew my account was up to date and see no need for another review.
The lady very politely explained that this was an annual process and she had to meet with me.
I declined and invited NIB to take me to court if I was in arrears.
Of course I did not miss the opportunity to suggest that the NIB should spend valuable time collecting from, or harassing those many people that they claim do not pay.
In reality, NIB is slouching toward bankruptcy and in all probability will not be with us in the year 2025 unless some drastic action is taken, according to the NIB’s own actuarial study.
Wasting time on my account, that is current, is absurd.
Get ready for your call for your “annual audit” from the NIB.

According to information given to me, N.I.B. has an 80% collection rate from established businesses, but a less than 40% collection rate from the self employed or construction industries.
They have been coming to us for years on an annual basis, but because we are computerized, they get a simple report, and are out in 1/2 an hour.
Perhaps they should stand at street lights and interrogate the occupants of passing trucks or busses?
Point is, this is the same logistical problem which they(Govt.) fear, with respect of collecting a sales, V.A.T. or income tax.
I mean, if they cannot collect but 40-60% of due duty at point of import, how on earth will they ever migrate to any other form of taxation which involves internal collection?

Maybe if more of us would stand firm and let Government know that we expect everyone to be accountable we might see some change – maybe!
We have this sort of problem in health care. The last time a health inspector visited our office I asked her if she had inspected the emporium/clinic(?) on Marathon road where one can get a tattoo and at the same appointment have some gold crowns cemented or a grill (for the mouth not the car.)
Two letters from me and one from the Dental Council to the Hospital and Health Care Facilities Licensing Board have been ignored.
So the inspector has been told that when she can prove that she has visited the tattoo emporium/clinic(?) and can show me their license to work in the mouth then she can inspect my clinic.
Perhaps we will both be in court.

Frankly I’m tiring of it all.
