Bahamas Prime Minister reports to the nation

I didn’t get the opportunity to watch or listen to Mr. Ingraham’s report to the nation last week, but I read the release in the newspaper and I must admit to feeling like someone was now in charge of The Bahamas.

This is somewhat different to the lack of confidence felt during the last couple years of the Christie administration.

If there was one disappointment for me it is that Mr. Ingraham did not mention when a Freedom of Information Act would be presented to Parliament.

With this in mind, there is also no mention of formalising accountability of Parliamentarians through the enactment of legislation. While I believe Mr. Ingraham might enforce the standards for public officials as outlined in the FNM Manifesto this has no basis in law.

His predecessor also had a code of ethics for his members but it had no basis in law. And as such there were no consequences for those members that were allegedly less than ethical or displayed behaviour that was inappropriate for leaders of our country.

In my not so humble opinion, this should take precedence over some of the other legislation foreshadowed.
