A popular blog from Barbados, Barbados Free Press, indicates that Mr. Owen Arthur, former Prime Minister of Barbados and his Barbados Labour Party quite possibly lost in a landslide because his party would not implement integrity legislation.
In a nutshell the opposition Democratic Labour Party has won 20 of the 30 Parliamentary seats.
This how one of our friends in Barbados put it:
The opposition DLP won – 21 to 9!! There is some dispute over one seat but that will not make any difference to the result. Our new prime minister has declared that Friday will be a public holiday…….starting out on the right foot!!!! The previous government had been in for 3 terms (15 years) so it was probably time for a change, even though things seemed to be going well and Bajans are thriving, despite prices. I think it was a bit of a surprise how big the swing was, but I guess that’s politics for you. Now we wait and see what this party will do and what promises they will keep!!
It seems all was peaceful and the BLP has gracefully moved aside, but we will see how it progresses.
Is there a lesson in this for The Bahamas?
Good luck Barbados.
