Junkanoo in The Bahamas seeking reimbursement for inclement weather damage?

It has been reported that many of the Junkanoo costumes were damaged as a result of rain in the early hours of Boxing Day morning. While it did not stop the parade, there was a lengthy delay.

And driving yesterday I had the opportunity to listen to More FM’s, Real Talk Live, when a caller suggested the Junkanoo groups should claim for damages from the government because the weather authorities did not predict the rain.

It’s just unreal, now the Bahamian taxpayer is expected to pay people because of bad weather!

Why should taxpayers that do not participate in Junkanoo, either directly or as a spectator be responsible for the event in the first place? It’s like basketball and football teams in the United States expecting their cities to build the stadiums. If the sport or event can’t pay for itself, too bad. Tax dollars should be put to better use.

If Junkanoo is the cultural icon people would have you believe, surely private donors participants and spectators should pay for the event?

Come on people, let’s get real.

I have heard my share of stupid requests in my time and this one rates right up at the top.
If Government even considers this request, especially with all of the financial requests that need to be considered, then all is lost.
This one is even worse than Government building a flea market -sorry, “straw market.”
