The Tribune story of Monday, September 21, 2007 by Karen Herig titled PLP ‘never planned officers to be in schools long term’ is most perplexing when we consider the uproar by the PLP and some of their operatives.

To back up a bit, the uproar began when the newly elected FNM government announced they would remove the Police Officers that had been placed in schools to help stem violence by school children and replace them with security officers.

Now, according to the above news story, Perry Christie, leader of the Opposition and former prime minister, is reported to have said that his party, the PLP, never intended that the Police would remain in the schools on a full time basis. In fact, he is quoted as saying “Our plan was to rid the schools of violence first and then allow the schools and their boards to determine the long term security needs.”

I must applaud Mr. Christie for taking this bold stand as it might help quell the uproar of his party’s fringe element, that is feeding an apparent fear frenzy.

If Mr. Christie’s remarks are not enough, it turns out that the teacher’s union does not support the idea of Police in schools either.

Is there any wonder why this issue is confusing?

Politics can be so perverse.
