What should happen to MP’s Gibson and Smith

by Rick Lowe

It has been interesting to read and listen to comments about the alleged brawl two Members of Parliament (MP’s) had in the Cabinet Office.

The comments have gone from the Prime Minister should fire them to the latest comment by another MP that the press is making far too much out of such a minor incident.

So it got me to thinking… and yes that could be dangerous! But, I wondered what would happen if any of our staff were in a brawl at the company where I work. And I think you know the answer already… someone would probably be fired.

Of course we would investigate the matter and decide a course of action, but we would not want people around that cannot settle arguments in a reasonably civilized manner. Who knows what a left upper cut today could lead to tomorrow? Maybe a knife fight? Or, heaven forbid, a gun fight!

So at the end of the day both MP’s should have to resign their seats and concentrate on their legal practices if they are in fact guilty after a proper investigation. They should not represent the Bahamian people as our so called leaders if they conducted themselves in the alleged manner. If found wanting, they have embarrassed themselves, their party, their supporters and the country.

For those leaders that wish to excuse these allegations because other leaders are rumoured to have done worse gives the country reason to pause.

Could this be why we take such a cavalier attitude toward stealing, lying and “sweethearting” to name but a few ethical lapses?
