On Garbage Collection

By Rick Lowe

I heard a portion of a newscast on Friday, September 15, 2006 and the Parliamentary Secretary for health, Mr. Ron Pinder was asking the Bahamian public to be patient while his department awaits delivery of a few new garbage trucks.

Apparently garbage has not been collected for two weeks now because several of the old collection trucks are broken down.

This begs the question: What would Mr. Pinder be saying if a private company was not able to pick the garbage up for two weeks?

I would be willing to bet that he would be suggesting that the private sector should be ashamed of the service they are providing and they should make other arrangements to collect the garbage until the trucks arrive or are repaired.

And you know what? It would be logical for the government to engage private trucks to collect the excess garbage around town until they can get their trucks sorted out.

In the meantime, don’t hold your breath while you await a logical solution from the government. But, you will just have to hold your nose for the stench!

  1. Are you suggesting, Rick
that Government should be held to the same rules that they set for private business?
We could make a list, couldn’t we?
    A long list.

Absolutely Dr. Sweeting. They should be happy to exhibit the standards they pass laws to hold the the private sector to.
The request by Mr. Pinder that the public be patient while waiting for them to sort out the problems of yet another government monopoly is simply preposterous.
Privatize the garbage collection I say. But before they can do that, they need to engage the private sector to get them out of this mess (garbage).
And you are right…what a long list it would be.

Dr. Sweting and Rick, I thought that the proposed consumer protection bill exempted government and government corporations from persecution, sorry I mean prosecution.
